You built the business for freedom. Somehow, you became the person it cannot function without.
Every decision finds you. Every customer exception needs your judgment. Every new opportunity becomes another obligation. You answer messages before sunrise, solve problems
after everyone leaves, and tell yourself the pressure will ease after the next hire, the next system, or the next revenue milestone.
It does not ease.
Before You Burn Out examines founder exhaustion as business evidence—not merely a personal wellness problem. Burnout can be the visible expression of a Leadership Constraint
in which the owner's energy, identity, availability, and decision-making have become structural requirements of the company.
Lawrence M. Schneider explores six recognizable faces of the pattern: the Burnout Spiral, the Yes Trap, decision fatigue at the top, the productivity myth, identity fusion, and a
business design that keeps the founder central to ordinary work. The book then brings those patterns together in a map showing how one governing condition can appear as
exhaustion, lost focus, overcommitment, constant interruption, inability to step back, and fear about what would happen if the founder became unavailable.
The issue is not that hard work is always unhealthy or that every tired owner is the governing constraint. Extraordinary effort may be appropriate during unusual periods. The
diagnostic question is whether exhaustion has become the operating model—whether the business repeatedly borrows from the founder's attention, judgment, health, family time,
and personal endurance because authority, priorities, structure, or identity have not changed with growth.
